Tooling a CNC gang tool lathe differs greatly from turret type lathes. Most tool holders available for other types of lathes do not work well with the gang type. The tooling and holders have been selected after years of experience with tooling gang style lathes. They take best advantage of the lathes ability to be changed over and the requirement that the tooling must be compact. Adjustable height and quick change tool holders The holders are all designed to help get as many tools on the tooling plate as possible. OmniTurn Control and OmniTooling for Quick Changeovers The holders are made to help with quick change overs. The OmniTurn control will store tool offsets with each job. The tool holders can be set up to take full advantage of the control's abilities. The cutting tools also have features that are advantageous to the gang style lathe. "Standard" turning tools for turret style lathes have square shanks that need to be held in holders from the side. This takes up too much room on a gang style lathe. Instead, round shank tooling is best suited for most turning work. Generally the type of turning done on the OmniTurn machines is high precision. Turning small parts and having to maintain tolerances in "tenths" requires inserts that have sharp edges that will reduce the tooling pressures that can cause part variations. Also the inserts must stand up to high volume production runs. These inserts and holders fit the special needs of the OmniTurn gang tooled lathes. |
